Inga Humpe started her musical career fronting the NDW band Neonbabies. Her sister Annette was also a member on their first album, which featured the original version of “Blaue Augen”. That song later became a hit for Annette’s band Ideal in a much smoother version.

This track from 1983 was Neonbabies’ farewell single and it is probably the best thing they ever did. A reworking of a song from their third and final album, it is a very cool slice of melodic NDW that deserved to be a hit. I guess the band split due to a lack of success, but a few months later Inga was at number one with DÖF, singing the lead vocals on “Codo”.

“Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann” was the last real smash hit of Neue Deutsche Welle, so it seems like a good place to end this series. It reached #3 in October 1984, and it’s interesting to note that it was the only German language song in the German top 40 (19/10/84). Remember, in August 1982 half the top ten was in their native language! Singing auf Deutsch was clearly out of fashion and English was dominant again. I guess this song bucked the trend because it was so memorable, but the following year Nena released their disappointing third album and their career started to go downhill. NDW was dead and the band broke up in 1987.

After this Nena (the singer) started a solid but unspectacular solo career. In 2002 she released the album “Nena feat. Nena”, celebrating 20 years of her career, where she re-recorded her old hits. By this time the world was ready for eighties nostalgia and she became a star again. The big single from the album was “Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime”, a duet with Kim Wilde which reworked this song in English and German. Once again it reached #3 in Germany and it was also a smash hit all around Europe, though it didn’t chart in the UK. I think “Somehow, Somewhere, Sometime” is a better translation because it conveys more of a sense of yearning, but “Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime” works better as a singable translation.

“Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann” war der letzte große Hit der Neuen Deutschen Welle, somit beenden wir diese Serie. Als die Single Platz drei in Deutschland im Oktober 1984 erreichte, war es die einzige deutschsprachige Single in der Top 40. Auf Deutsch zu singen war nicht mehr cool, und Englisch war wieder gefragt. NDW war am Ende.

Fast zwanzig Jahre später hatte Nena ein Comeback. Sie sang eine neue Version des Songs “Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann” mit Kim Wilde, die ein bisschen wie die englische Nena war. Die Single erreichte noch einmal Platz drei, und Nena war wieder ein Star.

While “gender benders” were all the rage in English pop in the early Eighties (most famously Boy George), most German pop stars were rather conservatively dressed in comparison.
So when Hubert Kah performed this song on TV wearing a nightdress, it caused quite a stir. It became his biggest hit, reaching #2 in 1982.

The lyrics of “Sternenhimmel” reference “Kann denn Liebe Sünde sein”, a song by Zara Leander which she sang it in the the 1938 film “Der Blaufuchs”. Some people consider the title to be a reference to homosexuality, which would make sense as the lyricist Bruno Balz was gay. Kah had already made a similar reference in his previous hit “Rosemarie”.

In den englischen Charts der frühen Achtziger gab es die “New Romantics”. Oft sahen die Männer wie Frauen aus – am berühmtesten war Boy George. Manchmal waren die Frauen als Männer verkleidet, zum Beispiel Annie Lennox in dem Video “Sweet Dreams”. Davon sah man in Deutschland gar nichts. Also als Hubert Kah im Fernsehen ein Kleid trug, waren die Zuschauer verwundert. Die folgende Kontroverse half dem Song zu Platz 2 in den Charts. Ich glaube, Kah war nicht schwul, und er hatte nur mit seinem Image gespielt. Mit fast jedem neuen Song veränderte er sein Image. In seinem nächsten Video trug er eine Zwangsjacke.

By 1983 there were already signs that the NDW scene was imploding. Both Annette Humpe’s band Ideal and Inga Humpe’s band Neonbabies were in the process of breaking up. Perhaps seeking some light relief, the sisters decided to work with a couple of Austrian comedians in the novelty project DÖF. Manfred Tauchen und Josi Prokopetz were no strangers to music, having previously recorded a satirical rock opera “Der Watzmann ruft” with the singer Wolfgang Ambros.
DÖF stands for Deutsch-Österreichisches Feingefühl (German-Austrian sensitivity) and is presumably a reference to the band DAF (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft).

The single “Codo” includes a memorable chorus sung by Inga Humpe, though apparently her sister stole the melody from a piece of East German Schlager written by Holger Biege. According to Prokopetz, “Codo” is short for “Cosmischer Dolm” which translates as “Cosmic Fool”. The song, a bizarre sci-fi pop confection, became one of the biggest hits of 1983, reaching #1 in Germany, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. The accompanying album was also successful, selling over half a million copies – pretty amazing for a comedy LP featuring spoken word skits in Viennese dialect! However, the Humpe sisters soon left the project to record as a duo.

The full five minute album version (which is arguably superior to the single edit) includes a few extra lines of lyrics which I have included here (in italics).

Annette Humpe hat dieser Schlager gehört und die Melodie benutzt für den Refrain in „Codo“. Sie dachte, dass Biege das nicht reklamieren konnte, weil er in Ostdeutschland lebte. Durch Zufall zog Biege 1983 in die BRD um. Er hörte das Lied und deshalb hat er eine Reklamation vorgenommen. Biege hat das Gerichtsverfahren gewonnen. Leider hatte er kaum Erfolg als Musiker in der Bundesrepublik. Ironischerweise arbeitete er schließlich als Experte für Plagiatsfälle.

The best place to hear NDW is on a compilation album, of which there are many. One of the better ones is the triple CD set “Fetenhits – Neue Deutsche Welle – Best Of” which contains a pretty fair representation of the good, the bad and the ridiculous from the era. However, as with many of these compilations, there’s no sign of Falco. The obvious reason of course is that he was Austrian, and this track includes a bit of Austrian dialect. Moreover, his career peaked around 1985 with his third album, when NDW was basically over. However, on this single (released at the end of 1981) and his strong debut album “Einzelhaft” (“Solitary Confinement”, 1982) Falco was one of the key players on the scene.

“Der Kommissar” is surely the first hit record to feature rapping in German, and it reached #1 in both Austria and Germany. However, it was a (very good) English cover by After The Fire which reached #5 in the US, though it missed the UK Top 40. Falco would have to wait a few years before he became a worldwide star…

NB There is some Austrian dialect in this song e.g. “di” means “dich”, “drah di net’ um” means “dreh dich nicht um” (“don’t turn around”), and “san” means “sind”.

Falco erscheint nicht in vielen NDW Samplern, vielleicht weil er kein Deutscher war. Falco kam aus Wien und war der erfolgreichste Pop Star aus Österreich aller Zeiten. “Der Kommissar” war sein erste Hit, und er erreichte Platz eins in Deutschland, Spanien, Italien, Japan und seine Heimat. Das war zehn Jahre vor Vanilla Ice. Also war Falco der erste erfolgreiche weiße Rapper.

Der Text ist eine Mischung aus Hochdeutsch, österreichisches Deutsch und Englisch. Manchmal ist das Englisch nicht so gut: “Sugar sweet, you gotta rappin’ to the beat”. Ich denke, dass er “Sugar sweet, you’ve got to rap to the beat” meint.

Scheinbar war das Lied von der Fernsehshow „Kottan ermittelt“ inspiriert worden. Falco hat einen Gastauftritt in diesem Kultkrimi in der Folge „Die Entführung“.

The top ten on 9th August 1982 in Germany was:

Trio were already falling down the chart with their mega-hit “Da Da Da”. It spent 8 weeks at #2 but never got to #1 (it was kept from the top by Eurovision winner Nicole’s “Ein bißchen Frieden” (“A Little Peace”)). They also peaked at #2 in the UK with an English version. However, Frank Zander was climbing the chart with a witless parody of the song – didn’t he realise the original was joke? This also peaked at #2.

Despite failing to make the top spot “Da Da Da” is probably second only to Nena’s “99 Luftballons” in terms of NDW hits. Trio released versions in at least 3 different languages and it was a hit around the world.

Trio’s deconstruction of rock was arguably far more radical than punk, and their use of a rhythm preset from the ultra-cheap Casio VL-1 keyboard on this track was a moment of genius. To appreciate their gift for comedy I suggest you check out their live performance on “Beat Club” from the same year.

Stephan Remmler (Gesang) und Kralle Krawinkel (Gitarre) spielten zusammen Ende der 1960er Jahre in einer Band namens Just Us, aber ohne großen Erfolg. 1979 haben Just Us einige „Reunion“ Konzerte gespielt. Danach haben die alten Freunde ihre Jobs als Lehrer aufgegeben, um Musik weiterzumachen. Bald haben sie Trio mit Peter Behrens (Schlagzeug) gegründet. Ihre minimalistischen Lieder hatten großen Erfolg, vor allem „Da Da Da“ (1982). Die Hintergrund-Gesangsstimme war Annette Humpe, die mit Ideal sang, und sie trägt mehr zur Maxi Single-Version bei. HOHE BERGE by FRL. MENKE

“Hohe Berge” made Frl. Menke an early star of NDW when it reached #10 in the German charts in 1982. She promoted it on TV wearing a dirndl, a traditional dress which matched the Alpine theme of the song. Her cheeky sense of fun won her a lot of fans and the single sold over 2.5 million copies. She had co-written the song with Harry Gutowski, the bassist with Joachim Witt, who we saw in part one of this series. Like many stars of this era Frl. Menke couldn’t maintain her early success, but she is still a regular on the NDW nostalgia circuit, still singing “Hohe Berge” and still wearing her trademark dirndl. Or at least she was until Covid 19 stopped all the fun…

NB Frl. is the abbreviation of Fräulein (Miss), though this is rather old fashioned these days.

1) The Gämse is a kind of mountain goat. Gams is an old fashioned spelling which would have been used by hunters in the past. It is called the chamois in English, and it is traditionally the source of chamois leather.
2) “La Montanara” is a famous Italian song about the Alps. The German version is also known as “Das Lied der Berge”.
3) Franz “Luis” Trenker was a climber who made many films about the mountains.
4) “Gipfelstürmer” (1933) is a German film about mountain climbing directed by Franz Wenzler. The English title is “The Peak Scaler”.

Pierre Schilling released a few unsuccessful Schlager singles in the late 1970s before changing his first name to Peter and jumping on the NDW bandwagon. It worked a treat, and “Major Tom” is one of the biggest and best loved German language hits of its era, hitting #1 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in 1982. Like many NDW artists Peter Schilling released English adaptations of his songs aimed at the international market. The excellent English version of “Major Tom” (subtitled “Coming Home”) was a major hit in the USA, but oddly enough it failed to crack the UK top 40.

The song is a kind of unofficial sequel of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”, though since Bowie had already written his own sequel (“Ashes To Ashes”) perhaps it’s actually part 3 of the saga. What Bowie himself thought about all this is unknown.

David Bowie veröffentlichte die Single „Space Oddity“ („Weltraumkuriosität“) 1969, das Jahr der Mondlandung. Es erreichte Platz 5 in den UK-Charts. Es erreichte nur Platz 40 in Deutschland, wo Bowie weniger beliebt war.

Das Lied wurde von vielen Künstlern aufgenommen. Die beste Version war von The Langley Schools Project, einer Gruppe von Kindern.

1980 veröffentlichte Bowie „Ashes To Ashes“ („Asche zu Asche“), das war wie eine Fortsetzung zu „Space Oddity“. Das Lied setzte die Geschichte von Major Tom fort, ein Astronaut im Weltraum verloren.

Peter Schilling erreichte 1982 Platz 1 der deutschen Charts mit „Major Tom“. Das Lied war wie ein inofizieller Nachfolger zu „Space Oddity“. Bowie selbst hatte niemals eine Nummer Eins in Deutschland.

Ina Deter had been around the block a few times before having a hit with this song, which reached #22 in 1983. Previously she had been a MOR singer-songwriter with a much lighter vocal delivery. In 1976 she entered a competition to represent Germany in the Eurovision song contest, but her self-penned song “Wenn du so bist wie dein Lachen” finished down in 9th place. However, the attention it gained helped her to get a record contract.

By the eighties Deter had a band and and the NDW influenced “Neue Männer braucht das Land” struck a chord with the public. The title has even become something of a popular expression in Germany. Interestingly, the lyrics of the aforementioned “Wenn du so bist wie dein Lachen” are quoted in the final verse of the song.

Is this a feminist anthem, and could Herbert Grönemeyer’s “Männer” (a hit the following year) be a masculine response?

NB Sometimes Deter changed the lyrics live. Here the last line becomes “tolle Frauen hat das Land” (the country has great women).

Ina Deter wollte Deutschland 1976 im Eurovision mit dem Song “Wenn du so bist wie dein Lachen” vertreten. Sie war nicht erfolgreich, aber das Erscheinen im Fernsehen hat ihrer Karriere geholfen. In den achtziger Jahren änderte sie ihren Stil und wurde Rocksängerin. Dieses Lied war ihr größter Hit und erreichte Platz 22 in 1983.

Das Land braucht neue Männer (The country needs new men)

In the song the word order is changed, perhaps to rhyme “Land” with “Wand”.

Neue Männer braucht das Land (New men need the country!?)

If we change the order of the English lyrics in the same way the meaning is changed!
It seems that German is more flexible than English in this case. One solution in English is to use the passive, then we can make men the subject e.g. New men are needed by the country.

Foyer des Arts were a strange band and their album “Von Bullerbü nach Babylon” (1982) is a truly bizarre artifact. When they sing in English they are relatively serious, but when they sing in German things become totally eccentric. At times they anticipate future musical giants like The Mighty Boosh and Flight Of The Conchords. They even had a hit when “Wissenswertes über Erlangen” made the German top 40 (peaking at #36), though this made them a one hit wonder novelty act in the eyes of the public.

Foyer des Arts’ singer Max Goldt worked as a tour guide in West Berlin before the band formed. The experience inspired the lyrics of this song, though he changed the location to Erlangen, a city in Bavaria (southern Germany). I guess he chose a random ordinary town to add to the deadpan humour of the song. The lyrics also mention the Sauerland, a region in North Rhine-Westphalia (western Germany) i.e. a long way from Erlangen!

Foyer des Arts waren eine seltsame Band und ihr Album „Von Bullerbü nach Babylon“ (1982) ist ein wahrhaft bizarres Artefakt. Wenn sie auf Englisch singen, sind sie relativ ernst, aber wenn sie auf Deutsch singen, werden die Dinge total exzentrisch. Manchmal klangen sie wie zukünftige musikalische Giganten wie The Mighty Boosh und Flight Of The Conchords. Sie hatten sogar einen Hit „Wissenswertes über Erlangen“, der die deutschen Top 40 erreichte, obwohl dies sie in den Augen der Öffentlichkeit zu einem One-Hit-Wonder machte.

Der Sänger des Foyer des Arts, Max Goldt, arbeitete als Reiseleiter in Westberlin, bevor die Band gegründet wurde. Die Erfahrung inspirierte die Texte dieses Liedes, obwohl er den Ort Erlangen, eine Stadt in Bayern (Süddeutschland), verlegte. Ich denke, er hat eine zufällige gewöhnliche Stadt ausgewählt, um den trockenen Humor des Songs zu verstärken. Die Texte erwähnen auch das Sauerland, eine Region in Nordrhein-Westfalen (Westdeutschland), d. h. weit weg von Erlangen!
