FRENCH POP LYRICS: LES GARÇONS PART 4
I am going to end this short series with arguably the most talented of the yé-yé boys. Michel Polnareff is a huge star in France, and he has had a long, colourful and sometimes controversial career. He released this single, the title track from his second album, in 1968 and it reached the top ten in France. This was despite the fact that radio was reluctant to play it, due to the dark lyrics which were written by Pierre Delanoë.
Polnareff went on to adopt a glam rock image in the 1970s, but that is another story.
THE BALL AT LAZE I will be hanged tomorrow morning My life wasn't meant For castles Everything happened on that June night A party was being held At the castle At Laze castle The largest ball in London Lord and Lady de Laze Receiving high society Diamonds, rubies, topazes And white long dresses Hidden in the garden Clenching my fists I was watching the dance Jane and her fiancé I will be hanged tomorrow at dawn That's a pity for the girl Of this castle As I think she really liked the love That we made peacefully Far away from the castle In Laze castle For Jane's twentieth birthday Lord and Lady de Laze Had received the Queen I was the fool that people stared at I was seething with hatred Hidden in the garden Clenching my fists I was watching the dance Jane and her fiancé I will be hanged tomorrow morning Four lines will be enough In the newspapers I am just a common assassin A vagabond unworthy Of this castle In Laze castle Maybe Jane As they are crushing me Will feel a little sorrow But my last words Will be to pity myself Since she will be given Another fiancé And I won't be able To eliminate that one |
