ER IST WIEDER DA by MARION MÄRZ

GERMAN POP LYRICS: The 1960s – Part 1

This is the start of a short series in which I will try and find some great German pop and rock songs sung in German from the 1960s.

Marion März released this single in 1965, its mournful mood probably influenced by ‘death discs’ by the likes of The Shangri Las and Twinkle (the latter of which Marion had previously covered). It certainly stood out from the Schlager crowd, becoming a huge hit and making Marion (briefly) the hippest female singer on the German scene.

The song was successful enough to inspire covers by Katja Ebstein and Ina Martell, plus a pretty good English version by Peggy March. In 1967 Marion recorded an excellent version of “I Go To Sleep”, written by Ray Davies of the Kinks. Sadly it wasn’t a hit and her moment in the spotlight was already fading…

Thanks to Paraphera for the original translation, but as ever I have made a few slight changes.

HE'S BACK AGAIN

He's back again, here again
He's back again, so I'm told
That he still wasn't with me, I can't understand
And I ask myself, what has happened

He's back again, but not with me
And he doesn't ring at my door
Everybody in the city has seen him
He's back again, what has happened

In every letter we spoke only of happiness
And how it would be for the two of us
But one day no more letters came back
Is it over, is it over and done?

He's back again, and he doesn't call
So what have I done to him?
He promised me day after day to only be with me
And now he's here, but I'm alone
He promised me day after day to only be with me
And now he's here, but I'm alone
