FRENCH POP LYRICS

Here is another song from Keren Ann’s second LP, ‘La Disparition’ (2002). Again it was co-written with Benjamin Biolay. The title means out of date, outdated or outmoded, but in context it is also implying old fashioned.

Since her first two albums Ann has sung mostly in English, and she reworked ‘Surannée’ as ‘Seventeen’ for her next album (see below). However, the English lyrics are completely unrelated to the original song.

‘Surannée’ was covered by Jane Birkin on her album ‘Rendez-vous’ (2004), her version being a duet with Françoise Hardy.

SURANNÉE

Surannée
Comme une ballerine
De l'Opéra Garnier
Indémodable mais...

Surannée
Chemise en popeline
Sonnet de Mallarmé
Peu négligeable mais...

Suranné
Après le chant du cygne
Dépassé, mis à la consigne
Du Grand Hôtel
Peu loin du Pier
Souvenir d'un souvenir

Surannée
Comme la beauté divine
D'une infante en corset
Inoubliable mais...

Surannée
La fumée des dancings
Le parfum des sorbets
Irremplaçables mais...

Surannée
Après le chant du cygne
Dépassé, mis à la consigne
Du Grand Hôtel
Peu loin du pier
Rire puisqu'il vaut mieux en rire

Surannée
Comme un grand verre de gin
Au Plaza Athénée
Inoubliable mais,

Surannée
Comme une ballerine
De l'Opéra Garnier
Indémodable mais...
OUT OF DATE

Out of date
Like a ballerina
At the Opera Garnier
Timeless yet...

Out of date
Poplin shirt
Sonnet by Mallarmé
Hardly insignificant yet...

Out of date
After the swan song
Discarded, left on the shelf
At The Grand Hotel
Not far from the pier
Memory of a memory

Out of date
Like the divine beauty
Of an Infanta in a corset
Unforgettable, but...

Out of date
Smoke from dance halls
The scent of sorbets
Irreplaceable, but...

Out of date
After the swan song
Discarded, left on the shelf
At The Grand Hotel
Not far from the pier
Laugh because it's better to laugh (?)

Out of date
Like a large glass of gin
At the Plaza Athénée (luxury hotel)
Unforgettable, but...

Out of date
Like a ballerina
At the Opera Garnier
Timeless yet...
