Spanish Pop Lyrics

Translations of the best Spanish, French and German pop and rock songs

Violeta Parra was an influential Chilean singer-songwriter. She is the subject of the 2011 biopic ‘Violeta Se Fue A Los Cielos’, but for me the film focuses too much on the tragic aspects of her life, and not enough on her achievements.

This song is from her final album, ‘Las Ultimas Composiciones’, released in 1966.

I took part of my translation from this page:

Volver a los diecisiete

después de vivir un siglo

es como descifrar signos

sin ser sabio competente.

Volver a ser de repente

tan frágil como un segundo,

volver a sentir profundo

como un niño frente a Dios,

eso es lo que siento yo

en este instante fecundo.

Se va enredando, enredando,

como en el muro la hiedra,

y va brotando, brotando,

como el musguito en la piedra,

como el musguito en la piedra,

ay, sí sí sí.

Mi paso retrocedido,

cuando el de ustedes avanza;

el arco de las alianzas

ha penetrado en mi nido

con todo su colorido,

se ha paseado por mis venas

y hasta las duras cadenas

con que nos ata el destino

es como un diamante fino

que alumbra mi alma serena.

Lo que puede el sentimiento

no lo ha podido el saber,

ni el más claro proceder

ni el más ancho pensamiento.

Todo lo cambia el momento

cual mago condescendiente,

nos aleja dulcemente

de rencores y violencia:

solo el amor con su ciencia

nos vuelve tan inocentes.

El amor es torbellino

de pureza original;

hasta el feroz animal

susurra su dulce trino,

detiene a los peregrinos,

libera a los prisioneros;

el amor con sus esmeros

al viejo lo vuelve niño

y al malo solo el cariño

lo vuelve puro y sincero.

De par en par la ventana

se abrió como por encanto,

entró el amor con su manto

como una tibia mañana;

al son de su bella diana

hizo brotar el jazmín,

volando cual serafín,

al cielo le puso aretes

y mis años en diecisiete

los convirtió el querubín.

To be seventeen again

after having lived a century

Is like deciphering ancient symbols,

without the proper knowledge.

to suddenly return to being,

as fragile as a second

to feel deeply again,

like a child before God.

That is what I feel

at this rich moment.

It winds and it gets tangled

like the ivy on the wall,

It grows and it spreads

like moss on a rock.

like moss on a rock.

Yes, yes, yes it does

My steps go backwards

while yours advance

The arc of the covenant

has penetrated my nest,

with all of its colour

it has passed through my veins,

even through the hard chains

that bind us to our destiny

It is like a precious diamond

that lights up my tranquil soul.

What love has achieved,

knowledge has not been able to.

or the best laid plans either,

or the greatest thoughts.

Everything changes in a moment

Like a kind magician

it can whisk us away

from bitterness and violence

Only the science of love

can make us innocent again..

Love is like a whirlwind

of original innocence

It even makes ferocious animals

whisper sweet sounds,

it stops pilgrims in their journey,

it liberates prisoners.

Love, with great care

turns old people into children again

and with affection it makes bad

people pure and sincere again

The window opened wide,

as if by some spell,

Love entered with its cloak,

like a warm morning,

At the sound of its sweet call,

the jasmine bloomed,

Soaring, like a beautiful angel,

making rings in the sky,

and back to seventeen

the cherub transforms me
