LO ÚNICO QUE TENGO By VICTOR JARA & ISABEL PARRA February 1, 2013

Víctor Jara was a Chilean singer-songwriter and political activist. He was murdered 40 years ago, aged 40, by the military regime. He was tortured before his death, and his hands were broken (or worse), which adds a horrific irony to what is a simple and beautiful song.

It comes from his 1972 album ‘La Población’ (‘The Village’). The sublime vocal is by Isabel Parra (the daughter of Violeta Parra).

.

LO ÚNICO QUE TENGO

.

¿Quién me iba a decir a mí?

¿Cómo me iba a imaginar?

si yo no tengo un lugar

en la tierra.

.

ESTRIBILLO:

Y mis manos son lo único que tengo

Y mis manos son mi amor

y mi sustento

.

No hay casa donde llegar,

mi paire y mi maire están

más lejos de este barrial

que una estrella.

.

ESTRIBILLO

.

¿Quién me iba a decir a mí

que yo me iba a enamorar?

cuando no tengo un lugar

en la tierra

.

ESTRIBILLO

THE ONLY THING I HAVE

.

Who would have told me?

How was a going to imagine?

If I have no place

on this earth.

.

CHORUS:

And my hands are all I have

And my hands are my love

and my livelihood

.

No home to arrive at

My mum and dad are

further away from this muddy land

than the stars

.

CHORUS

.

Who would have told me

That I was going to fall in love?

When I have no place

on this earth

.

CHORUS
