Translations of the best Spanish pop and rock songs

NEGRO Y AZUL By LOS CUATES DE SINALOA October 1, 2011

‘Breaking Bad’ is one of the most original US TV shows of the last few years.

It’s about a chemistry teacher dying from lung cancer who turns to drug dealing to try and provide for his family.

There’s occasional Spanish dialogue in the show, usually without subtitles, though they are included for this song on the DVD (my translation below is slightly different, I think it’s a bit more faithful to the Spanish lyrics).

The 7th episode of the 2nd series opens with this song, which is basically a tongue in cheek look at the story so far in the style of a Narcocorrido (a Mexican drug ballad).

UPDATE: I have now added the third verse, which doesn’t appear in the show but which is included in the soundtrack version (Feb 2013).

NEGRO Y AZUL

.

La ciudad se llama Duke

Nuevo Mexico el estado

Entre la gente mafiosa

su fama se ha propagado

Causa de una nueva droga

que los gringos han creado

.

Dicen que es color azul

y que es pura calidad

Esa droga poderosa

que circula en la ciudad

Y los dueños de la plaza

no la pudieron parar

.

Tienen en la plaza de Duke

El Tuco y el Krazy 8

Al Tuco le dieron piso

Manejando su escalade

Un poco antes los gabachos

Quebraron a Krazy 8

.

Anda caliente el cartel,

al respeto le faltaron

Hablan de un tal Heisenberg,

que ahora controla el mercado

Nadie sabe nada de el,

por que nunca lo han mirado

El cartel es de respeto

y jamas ha perdonado

Ese compa ya está muerto

Nomás no le han avisado

.

La fama de Heisenberg

Ya llego hasta michoacan

Desde alla quieren venir

A probar ese cristal

Ese material azul

Ya se hizo internacional

.

Ahora si le quedo bien

a Nuevo mexico el nombre

A mexico se parece

En tanta droga que esconde

Solo que hay un capo gringo

Por Heisenberg lo conocen

.

Anda caliente el cartel,

al respeto le faltaron

Hablan de un tal Heisenberg,

que ahora controla el Mercado

Nadie sabe nada de el,

por que nunca lo han mirado

A la furia del cartel

nadie jamas ha escapado.

Ese compa ya esta muerto

Nomas no le han avisado.

BLACK & BLUE

.

The city’s called Duke

The state New Mexico

Amongst the gangsters

Its fame has spread

Because of a new drug

The gringos have created

.

They say the colour is blue

And it’s of pure quality

That powerful drug

That is circulating in the city

And the people who run the area

Couldn’t stop it

.

In the square in Duke

They’ve got Tuco and Krazy 8

They killed Tuco

While he was driving his Cadillac

Just before the Americans

Beat up Krazy 8

.

The cartel’s running hot

Because they weren’t getting respect

They talk about some ‘Heisenberg’

Who controls the market now

No one knows anything about him

Because they’ve never seen him

The cartel’s about respect

And they never forgive

But that guy’s dead already

He just doesn’t know it

.

Heisenberg’s fame

Has reached Michoacan

They wanted to come from there

To try that crystal meth

That blue stuff

That’s now become international

.

Now it’s living up to

The name New Mexico

It looks like Mexico

With all the drugs it’s hiding

Except it has a gringo boss

Known as ‘Heisenberg’

.

The cartel’s running hot

Because they weren’t getting respect

They talk about some ‘Heisenberg’

Who controls the market now

No one knows anything about him

Because they’ve never seen him

From the fury of the cartel

No one has ever escaped

But that guy’s dead already

He just doesn’t know it

Great stuff. I’ve been looking for the Spanish lyrics for a while.

  2. pemulis Says:

thanks a lot for the spanish lyrics!

  3. mobo Says:

“su fama” refers to the city doesnt it? More appropriately the English translation would be “its fame fame has spread”

Great translation! Just one correction I would make.

Given the overall meaning, I would translate “Solo que hay un capo gringo/ Por Heisenberg lo conocen”
    to
“Only that it has a gringo boss
    Known as ‘Heisenberg’”

Ie, New mexico looks just like like mexico, but that it has a gringo boss (not a Mexican one). “solo que” means “but that” or “except that.” To say “There’s only one gangster boss”, would be “solo hay un capo”

I think you’ll agree this way makes that stanza make more sense.

thanks for your lyrics, i have been watching breaking bad.
