MÁS DURA SERÁ LA CAÍDA By GABINETE CALIGARI April 4, 2011

Filed under: 1980s,Gabinete Caligari — spanishpoplyrics @ 12:37 pm

Gabinete Caligari were part of ‘La Movida’ – the new wave of independent groups
that emerged in Spain in the early eighties
(arguably the most interesting period in Spanish pop).
They started out as a goth band, but by 1984 they had edged towards pop.
This track comes from "Cuatro Rosas", a mini-LP
which was the first Spanish independent release to go gold.

THE HARDER THEY FALL

I want you to be my friend forever
So that I can scold you
I want you to be my friend forever
So that I can obey you

And I want you to forget that
The fall with be harder for us both

I want you to always have that smile
That reminds me of my mum
I want you to always lock the doors
So I can’t escape

And I want you to forget that
The fall with be harder for us both
Always keep it in mind
the fall with be harder for us both

What gestures, what manners
You make when you get angry
I want you to always be by my side
So I can watch them

And I want you to forget that…

GRAMMAR:

The title comes from the expresion:

In English we usually say:
The harder they come, the harder they fall

This is a good song for practicing the present subjunctive!
It’s used here to express desires directed at another person.

Quiero que + Present Subjunctive

Verbs (Tú): Present Simple -> Present Subjunctive:

Eres -> Seas
Olvidas -> Olvides
Pones -> Pongas
Cierras -> Cierres
Vas -> Vayas

The use of the subjunctive is difficult, because it doesn’t really exist in English.
Many times it is referring to an uncompleted future, a possibility that is not certain.

Quiero que seas mi amiga por siempre
