Today is a Valentine’s Day special – for anyone whose been dumped recently!
Pop geeks Melodrama were not destined for stardom.
They deserved it though - this single from 1980 has got a great tune and funny lyrics.
For more info see Vermouthsport - an interesting blog about Spanish pop
(though the top 100 countdown seems to have stalled).

NO ME DIGAS QUE ME DEJAS

Hoy que ya no estoy
por nadie más que por tí,
que de tener según que amigos me arrepentí.
Hoy que por fin me fui de casa,
no estás segura de mí.

Hoy que altivo llevo
aquel peinado especial,
que a ti te gusta tanto
y que me cae tan mal,
no sabes qué es lo que te pasa,
¿será que hay otro, quizás?

Piensa que por tí
lo que no haría y haré,
te compraré en Madrid
aquel precioso cupé,
aquellas perlas grises perla
te las conseguiré.

No me digas que me dejas,
no te eches atrás.
En el amor no podría creer nunca más.

Hoy que ya no siento
aquel brutal repelús
al contemplar aquellos jerseys que me haces tú.
Hoy que el rectísimo camino
tomé con exactitud.

Hoy que por fín dejé de beber
Estomacal Bonet,
de fumar Ideales,
de ser fan de la Welch,
que me vendí todita entera
la cole de Weekend Sex.

No me digas que me dejas...
DON’T SAY THAT YOU’RE LEAVING ME

Today now that I’m not
Anyone’s except yours
According to friends I regretted
Today that I’ve finally left home,
You’re not sure about me

Today I’m so smug about
That fancy hairdo
That you like so much
And that doesn’t suit me
You don’t know what is happening to you
There might be someone else, maybe?

Think what for you
I wouldn’t do and will do for you
In Madrid I’ll buy you
That lovely Coupe
Those grey pearls
I’ll get them for you

Don’t say that you’re leaving me
Don’t back out
I could never believe in love again

Today now that I don’t feel
That violent shiver
Looking at those jerseys you make me
Today the straightest path
I took exactly

Today that I finally quit drinking
Estomacal Bonet (Spirits)
Smoking Ideales (Roll-Ups)
Being a fan of Welch (Raquel)
I sold my complete
Collection of Weekend Sex (Magazine)

Don’t say that you’re leaving me…

CHORDS:
Verse:
D – Bm – G – A – G – A (2 times)
D – A – Bm – F#m – G – A – G – A
Chorus:
D – C/D – D – C/D
F – Eb/F – F – A7

GRAMMAR:
The imperative is strangely complicated in Spanish,
with different rules for positive and negative phrases (with Tu and Vosotros):
Dime – Tell me!
No me digas – Don’t tell me! / Don’t say

Basically the imperative uses the present subjunctive,
but positive statements with Tu and Vosotros are exceptions, and have their own rules.
Tu: Regular verbs use the Usted/3

rd

 person form:
Canta – Sing!
Escuchame – Listen to me!

Most of the irregular verbs use the stem only:

Tener -> Ten e.g. Ten cuidado – Be careful!

For Vosotros all the verbs are regular with id or ed endings added to the stem:

Tened cuidado – Be careful! (plural)

  1. Carlos Says:

    Hi folk:

I think there is a mistake in the lyrics. When it say “Hoy que al fin yo llevo” I think it would say “Hoy que altivo llevo”. And in English could be: “Today that I haughty (proudly) took (got)”

  2. Yes, I think you are correct – thanks for your help. However haughty sounds very formal, especially in context. I prefer ‘Today I’m so smug about that fancy hairdo’.
